I don’t want to sound harsh but everyone is looking for 20% conversion rates (or better!)
If I were you, I wouldn’t rule out any form of advertising. The most important metric after all is profit. I have many profitable PPC campaigns right now and while most are not getting a 20% conversion (or anywhere near that) it just doesn’t matter.
If I can spend $1 a day (just as an illustration) and make $2 per day in commissions then I’m tickled pink. There aren’t a whole lot of places out there where you can double your investment (daily) anymore.
Sure, you can lose your shirt if you don’t know what you are doing too but that’s the same will all paid advertising. The same will hold true with solo email advertising as well.
If you decide to promote via solo-emails then I recommend the following…
[1] Ask the list owner as many questions as you need to have answered before investing (pester them professionally). I’d want to know things like… subscriber size, demographic information (if available), how often the list owner promotes to this list, what kind of results other advertisers have seen, what kind of promotions they are used to seeing, etc. etc.
[2] Ask for a discounted rate for your first promotion. Tell the
list owner that if it goes well, you’ll be back for more. If it flops, you’ll have protected some of your advertising capital.
[3] Find out if they can give you metric information like the open-rate, the click-through rate, etc. The more information you can gather, the more successful you will be next time.
Regardless of which promotional path you take, remember that at the end of the day, profitability is king!

No, the problem there is it targets people who most likely already have their own affiliate links. The only people who may visit through your link is for those who are surfing the web, the people who go into your link, and out of there in a few minutes. It does drive some traffic but most likely, you would be wasting your money. It also depends on what type of affiliate link you are advertising… as in your product, your offer, what ever it may be. Look for a more focused advertising called niche marketing, targeted advertising, but most importantly, don’t get scammed or schemed by people promising you a great result, the world of affiliate marketing is NEVER that easy as people hope it is.
